Review of Andrew Wilson's Latest Book
In January 2021 I was walking round our local park with Andrew Wilson, as we often do when we want to catch up. I took the opportunity to ask him what he was working on at that time. He told me he was thinking of writing a book about 1776 and how the events of that year, more than any other, shaped post-Christian western culture. As encouraging as always, I responded by asking who would want to read that!
I’m glad to say that Andrew was not put off by my somewhat dismissive reaction, and this week his latest book, Remaking the World: How 1776 Created the Post-Christian West, was published. I had the privilege of receiving an early copy to take on holiday with me and can tell you that it really is a remarkable work. In his normal engaging and highly readable style, Andrew takes us on a journey through key events and cultural influences that have helped make modern western society what it is today. It is a fascinating historical analysis, and I felt as if I was learning something new in every paragraph. He finishes by considering what this means for us as Christians, looking at both the challenges and opportunities facing the Church as we seek to build God’s kingdom within this context. I found the book stimulating, insightful and helpful, and I cannot commend it to you enough.
