Let us Pray
What a fantastic message Andrew brought to us last Sunday, looking at what the four Gospels teach us about Jesus’s prayer life. It launched us into a wonderful week of prayer at King’s, encountering God as we gather together each evening.
In the book of Acts, we see the early church coming together to pray on numerous occasions. Corporate prayer was central to their lives: it was while they were gathering to pray in Acts 2 that the Holy Spirit fell upon them; it was while Peter and John were walking to the temple to pray that they healed a beggar, saying, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!”; when the church are under persecution in Acts 4, they gather to pray and the Holy Spirit fills them, empowering them, “to speak the word of God with boldness”.
The Gospels show us that Jesus prayed constantly. The early church made prayer a priority in their lives. Prayer is an essential part of the Christian life. That is why we like to start each year at King’s with a week of prayer. It has been fantastic to see the room full every evening this week as we have come before God to pray for one another, for King's, and for God’s kingdom to come in this nation and beyond. If you haven’t yet made it to one of the sessions this week, I encourage you to come along to your site’s prayer evening tonight, or to our final evening tomorrow at Catford. You can find all the details you need here.
Finally, I have found Mike Betts’ book on corporate prayer, The Prayers of Many, very helpful, and recommend it to you.
